Every musician knows this phenomenon: playing in an ensemble leads to intense flow experiences, which often even transfer to the audience. So if an ensemble makes the emergence of flow states one of its consciously aspired goals, it increases its effect on the audience.
The flow effect occurs if you focus on the aspects of sound fusion, rhythmic orientation and musical idea.
A cultivation of these three dimensions produces a high tonal and interpretative quality.
The subtle fusion of sounds is based on the physical phenomenon that two notes of any interval always have more or less overtones in common. Ensembles that are sensitized to this phenomenon and consistently bring their voices together in the overtone area create intense clouds of sound that immediately touch emotionally.
Sound Fusion
A physical phenomenon with strong effect
Even highly dissonant sounds, which are easily perceived as irritating or annoying when the sound culture is missing, unfold their very own, fascinating beauty, to which we spontaneously open up. Furthermore, by cultivating the overtone sound the musical meaning of a melody or phrase is also revealed in a completely natural way.
The rhythmic orientation within an ensemble leads to a high degree of security and coordination of the different voices.
Rhythmic Orientation
Security and coordination
The decisive factor here is the feeling for the breathing, vivid pulse of a melody or phrase. A common attunement to this higher level of order creates a hypnotic effect and ensures great clarity and precision.
The sensitization for the emotional meaning of a work and the working out of a consensual musical vision establishes a high degree of unity within an ensemble and condenses its performance.
Musical Idea
Telling an emotional story
Ensembles, which design their interpretation from this level, create inner images of high intensity in the audience. The emotional meaning of a melody or phrase is basically generated receptively from the music itself. It is felt and sensed.
